The first green surfboard has arrived in the form of Biofoam. The ecofriendly blank is nearly 50% plant products, and is the brainchild of surfer Chuck Menzel. Biofoam is made by replacing the polyol component of the foam with materials converted from natural plant oils. Producing Biofoam means 36% less global warming emissions and a 61% reduction in non-renewable energy use.
Homeblown U.S. out of San Diego, CA is manufacturing Biofoam which is as lightweight and as strong as any foam blank on the market and shapes as well as any other polyurethane foam blank. Biofoam has a finer and more uniform cell structure compared to those made with petroleum-based materials... yet it still boasts excellent strength and flex.
